Who takes Real Estate
Con. Ed.?
- Real estate licensees must successfully complete
22.5 hours of Department of State approved continuing education
within their 2-year license renewal period. This
requirement must be satisfied prior to renewing their license.
The law does provide for an exemption from this
requirement for a real estate broker who has 15 consecutive
years of combined licensure as a salesperson and a broker
and who is actively engaged in the real estate business
as a real estate broker at the time of renewal. Attorneys
admitted to the NYS Bar are also exempt from the continuing
education requirement. NOTE: Effective for renewals on or after July 1, 2008, the 22.5 hours of required continuing ed credit must include at least three hours of instruction pertaining to fair housing (NYREI currently runs a 7.5 hour fair housing class each month and starting in July will run the 3 hour class).
Also effective July 1, 2008 NYS will eliminate the current exemption from continuing education requirements for those brokers who do not have fifteen years of continuous experience.
